Deli Meat

Deli meats, hot dogs, bacon, and other processed meats contain nitrates, which can become dangerous when they are converted to nitrites, usually during the cooking process. These nitrates can then react in your stomach to form nitrosamines — dangerous, cancer-causing chemicals.

Additionally, lunch meats and hot dogs can also become contaminated with listeria monocytogenes between the cooking and packaging process. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimate that pregnant women are about 20 times more likely to become sick from this bacterium, and it can pass from mom to baby through the placenta. In severe cases, it can cause miscarriage, premature delivery, and death. The current recommendation from the FDA is for pregnant women to avoid lunch meats, deli meats, and hot dogs unless they are reheated and steaming hot.
