Unpasteurized Cheeses


Soft and semi-soft unpasteurized cheeses such as Brie, feta, goat, Limburger, Montrachet, Neufchâtel, ricotta, Gorgonzola, Muenster, and Roquefor carry listeria, which has the potential to be dangerous.

Hard cheeses and pasteurized cheeses do not contain listeria. All American cheeses are made with pasteurized milk and are therefore safe to eat during pregnancy, but imported cheeses are not all pasteurized and should be avoided. You should be able to look at the cheese label to be sure that it's pasteurized, but if you are at a social event or restaurant and don't know what types of cheeses are being served, it is best to avoid them completely.
